IT’S TIME TO PARTY!!!

POTLUCK

Hooray! Lara Golden volunteered to host our first Potluck Fundraising Event of the year!

The potluck is taking place on March 16th at 6PM at Lara Golden’s home at 2324 Huasna Rd., Arroyo Grande. It’s only 6 minutes from the center of Arroyo Grande. The Evite has been sent out. If you did not receive an Evite but would like to attend, please email us at sslocwomenade@gmail.com. Here’s what the Evite said:

“Hooray! Lara Golden volunteered to host our first potluck of the year! We've all been waiting for an opportunity to gather once again. Although Omicron is on the wane please only come if you are fully vaccinated! We're hoping for some wonderful outdoor weather.

This is our first fundraiser of the year - donations are down so we are hoping for a great turnout. Please bring a dish to share, your place setting and a drink and a check made out to South SLO County Womenade for $50 (more is always welcome!!!)

We are collecting new books for the Book for Kids (babies to middle school) program that Womenaders Sharon McDaniel, Kim Heyde, Piper Adelman and Carla Lalley are running. Especially needed are books in Spanish. We are also collecting feminine hygiene products (our formal drive will be in April).

We are also in need of those larger cans 12.5 oz of chicken for the weekend food bags for school children who don't have sufficient food on the weekend.

Please spread the word, bring a friend. If it's your first potluck come learn about all the wonderful things Womenaders are doing in south SLO county!”

RAFFLE, “ADMIN APRIL”, AND POTLUCKS

April Raffle and Potluck – We are very grateful that a number of Womenaders have donated some wonderful prizes for our RAFFLE. We plan to hold a raffle at the potluck on Tuesday, April 26th at 3PM. We would love more offers of items for the raffle as well as “experiences” such as frequent flyer tickets or time shares that you could offer! Please dig into your stashes of things that you think might make a good raffle prize and contact us at sslocwomenade@gmail.com.

Admin April - The proceeds of our last Admin April in 2020 lasted us a couple of years, and we need to hold another one. Our expenses are very small (approximately $3,000 a year and mostly for insurance) but they still exist. No one gets paid in South SLO County Womenade and all our traditional funds raised (except Admin April) are used to meet urgent and emergency needs. We will hold a specific fundraiser “Admin April” in April. A few donors have already made donations earmarked for Administrative Expenses, and we are very grateful.

PROJECTS

Many of you have said you are looking for meaningful things to do. A couple of teams have put together a couple of projects under our umbrella. See how they’re doing it and if you have a project that you’ve always wanted to do, contact us and we’ll see if we can work with you to run it under our umbrella.

The Book Drive

This book drive run by Sharon McDaniel, Kim Heyde, Piper Adelman, and Carla Lalley is up and running. Following up on their very successful December book drive, they are planning on continuing the drive quarterly. Pictured above are the 700 plus books collected with 100 of those being books in Spanish. They are distributing these books soon.

Many of our South County families are Spanish speaking. Please continue to look for new and lightly used books for children from nursery school to grade 8.

Books in Spanish help the literacy of the children and the parents as the parents will be able to read to their children while the children learn English in school. We have curated a list of books on Amazon in Spanish for different ages of children from nursery school to grade 6. Many Womenaders have ordered books but there are still many titles available.

If you would like to help, here’s how to access the Amazon wish list:

1. Sign into your Amazon page (it would be great if you signed into smile.amazon and sponsored San Luis Obispo County Womenade)

2. Near the top of the Amazon page click on the box that says “Hello, your name, account and lists”

3. In the middle of this next page there is a column that says "Your lists"; click on Find a list or registry

4. It will ask you for the registrant's name = Womenade; and then click on select a registry or gift list type box = custom gift list; click search.

5. We only have one registry list = Books in Spanish

6. Remember to click the "see more items" at the bottom to get the complete list. The mailing address is Sharon's office address: McDaniel Reporting, 1302 Osos St., SLO, CA 93401

For ongoing donations of books you can drop off books at:

1. McDaniel Court Reporting, 1302 Osos Street, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

2. Piper Adelman (residence) 606 Cerro Vista Lane, Arroyo Grande, CA 93420

The Feminine Hygiene Product Drive

Lola Zybura and Lisa Chadwick are leading the Feminine Hygiene Product Drive. The plan is to run this drive in April. If you’d like to help them out please let us know sslocwomenade@gmail.com, and we will put you in touch with them.

Another project needing a leader – Many people have said they would like to be involved in a more hands-on manner. Toiletry Drive in August The leader of the project will recruit co-leaders, helpers, places to gather the donations, contact the places that need the toiletries and arrange for delivery to these agencies. If this is something that appeals to you please contact us at sslocwomenade@gmail.com and we will work with you to get started.

County Nurses Need

Our county nurse has requested a couple of high chairs:

  • The first family has a 6 month old that is just starting solids. Dad is working but mom stays home with the 3 kids and finances are really tight. Mom is struggling with mental health issues and after trying to work full time, it wasn’t working for their family.

  • The other family is a single mom of 2. Her baby is 9 months old. She has no dining room table or chairs and her old high chair that she got for free has broken straps and she needs a safe one for the baby.

We had a used one donated already but if anyone else has another one or is able to order one here is a good possibility: Safety 1st 3-in-1 Grow and Go High Chair. Please contact Melissa Richardson to check if it’s still needed.

We are a charity on Amazon Smile. Please remember to sponsor us when you shop on Amazon. You can select us SLO County Womenade and Amazon will give a small percentage of your purchase to us!
