Turning the Page to Winter School Break Baskets

Winter School Break Baskets

Does it feel a little like the movie “Groundhog day”?

As advertised, now that the huge Thanksgiving Baskets project is almost complete (see update below) , it’s time to turn the page and our focus to the Winter School Break Food Baskets! Many thanks to the many food donors, cash donors, project leader, shoppers, and all volunteers who are giving 185 families a wonderful Thanksgiving this year, and who helped make this a resounding success!. We often hear that recipients say they can’t believe that this bounty comes from people that don’t even know them!

But, yes, we're doing this again for the Winter Holiday School 3 week break. It is a hard time for families as they don’t receive school breakfasts and lunches over the break. With your help, we are going to put together bags of food filled with pantry staples to get another 110 families through the winter holiday school break. We have a quick turnaround time with this project, and we know it’s right on the heels of our fall food drive. We appreciate all of you!

Sample Facebook Message:

"Hello friends! It’s time for the 3rd annual food drive for South SLO County Womenade. Food insecurity has increased, and so have their numbers. We are gathering food for 110 families this year (90 last year). If you'd like to help, you can sign up to donate food using the link below and drop it off at various locations 12/2 – 12/5. They’ll send you drop off locations after you sign up. They also need help packing up the food and delivering it to agency locations on 12/12. It's a lot of fun and a great way to meet new friends as well."

Thanksgiving Baskets Update

From top left, sorting and counting food, volunteers, food laid out pre-sorting, 185 packets of tortillas, counting items, donated taco chips from Taco Works, Robin Pisz’s barn, one drop off location, a fridge full of crema!

It’s countdown time to our Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway!  So many people signed onto the Thanksgiving Basket SignUpGenius, and all items for 185 were selected and dropped off, sorted and counted!  Additional gratitude to Taco Works who donated their taco chips for both the Thanksgiving and Winter Break baskets! Also the SLO Foodbank who had a number of items available free and all the turkeys at very discounted prices.

Special shout out  to Marcella Gelman, who priced all requested items at multiple stores and purchased and stored all the cheese, crema and tortillas. Also Sue McCutcheon who purchased all the butter and Mary Anne Morgan who ordered as many available items from the SLO Foodbank and picked them up and delivered them.

Packing and delivery day is Thursday November 21! Then we’re charging into the Winter Break Baskets!
