Here's what's happening at South SLO County Womenade

Potlucks

Our next potluck is on Thursday February 27th at 6PM at the Black Lake in their Community Room at 498 Colonial Pl., Nipomo hosted by Deb Sherry and Marilyn Mullaney. This is our first Potluck in Nipomo, and we hope you will spread the word and invite your friends and neighbors in Nipomo and beyond to come learn about us. Invite a friend or neighbor, bring your delicious dish to share, your place setting, a beverage and your check. Evites are going out on February 13th. If you don't receive one and would like to attend, please email us.

The March potluck  is a Tea Party on Wednesday March 19th at 1:30PM hosted by Lopez High School at 1055 Mesa View Dr, Arroyo Grande, CA 93420.  Start looking for a tea cup and saucer to bring to the tea along with your dish, place setting and check!  Tea will be provided. This is a great time to get to know this gem of a school right in our neighborhood. Spread the word and invite neighbors and friends!

Their next pop up will be at Washboard Laundromat, 111 S Halcyon Rd., Arroyo Grande on February 15th from 10 am - 12 Noon. They need 3 - 4 volunteers

To offer opportunities for volunteers to sign up in advance for the event site and dates of their choosing Belinda put together this Sign-Up Genius

Nipomo Food Distribution – Rosemary Cleaves, Sue McCutcheon, and Mary Anne Morgan - project leaders

The February Food distribution was on Tuesday February 11th at the Nipomo Elementary School (always the second Tuesday of the month). We had a small volunteer team who worked efficiently together. We gave out food to 360 families on a very cold and windy evening and even ran out!.  With the new policy of not requiring names or addresses, we had many more clients than expected as many reported that they were picking up for families who were afraid to come themselves.

We work with the SLO FoodBank slofoodbank.org and Nipomo Elementary School to make the Food Distribution happen. Thank you SLO Foodbank and all our fabulous volunteers! Let us know if you want to be on the substitute list. The next distribution will be on Tuesday, March 11th.

Nutrition Team -  Lopez High School Food Pantry - Leader Mary Anne Morgan

Every week Mary Anne Morgan orders food from the SLO Foodbank. On alternating Wednesdays, she orders and picks up food (both fresh and non-perishable) at the SLO Foodbank and delivers it to Lopez High School. The staff and volunteer students unload, arrange and staff the food pantry at noon at the school for students and their families. Some of the local families have discovered the pantry, and they come after the students have "shopped". The other week she picks up food for the Food Distribution at the Nipomo Elementary School.

Nutrition Team - Weekend Food Bags for Food Insecure Students - Leader Ann McDowell

Every week during the school year a large number of dedicated people purchase and pack brown bags filled with food for students who don't have enough to eat on the weekends. During the school year these students have access to breakfast and lunch at school during the week but not on the weekend.  These volunteers are delivering 115 of these bags to elementary and middle schools weekly. These students are identified by the schools and  are very grateful to have food for the weekend. There are still a couple of schools we are not serving. If you would like to help out, contact us at sslocwomenade@gmail.com

We Love Educators – Lisa Arakaki project leader

We Love Educators (WLE) Volunteers for Teachers Project is a group of in-class volunteers who want to show appreciation and encouragement for South SLO County teachers, especially those who are new to the district and/or profession. Anyone (you don't have to have been a teacher)  interested in learning more and/or signing up to volunteer (in elementary schools) can fill out this online Google Form: Interest/Sign-Up Form for SSCW's "We Love Educators - Volunteers for Teachers" Project which goes directly to project leader Lisa Arakaki. She can answer any questions via email <weloveeducators@gmail.com> about the project and the district's volunteer registration/approval process. Once approved by the district, the Google Form information (volunteer's availability, school site/grade level, and subject preferences) will be forwarded to the district's Human Resources office to be matched with one or more elementary teachers who have requested in-class help. Educators and volunteers alike appreciate the mutual benefits of this project, especially seeing how much the students eagerly await their time with WLE volunteers!
